On Friday afternoon (Dec. 14, 2012), we had a 9th mentor review about VPPR (Vice President of Public Relations) sharing for coming COT (Coach Officers Training).
To begin it,
Mentor: 喂，你好。
Mentee: 师傅！
First, I repeated to mentor that we need a picture together with new banner, so that my contribution to Toastmasters magazine would be published soon.
Well, we have the new banner now. We have a meeting No.179 on Dec.22. Both of us will attend it. We can have one picture then. Cool!
After reviewing my slides, mentor proposed 4 suggestions.
Firstly, in order to match the banner strip on top, it is suggested to insert a color strip at bottom and apply it to all slides.
Secondly, concerning overall effect, it is suggested in the last slide that I may change font pink color and highlight the symbol “?" in the Toastmasters family picture.
Thirdly, concerning overall effect, it is suggested in the 3rd slide that I may change the font white color in the table.
Fourthly, it makes little difference whether to use “Request” or “Question” in the 3nd slide. Generally, it depends on your audience. For example, it sounds pretty the same to audience when you said “1” and “幺" in Chinese. It is suggested to deliver your message in clear and simple language.
# I asked, shall I translate Chinese titles into English?
% Mentor replied, who will be your audience?
# I said, officers from Area Q2 and members guests.
% Mentor replied, can they read Chinese?
# I answered, supposed so.
% Mentor said, Chinese looks more neatly than English.
I agreed.
In closing,
% Mentor asked, how long have you worked on it?
# I answered, this morning. But I had prepared it two days ago.
% Mentor commented, well done.
# I asked, how do you usually relax from working pressure?
% Mentor replied,
1st, look up to stars sitting on the window.
2nd, look at the ground from a plane window.
You will find peace and silence of moments.
That makes sense. I may have a try next time.
I had reminded mentor of his speech at meeting No.180, Dec.29, 2012. I would give my C7 speech that day too. It is a competition between mentor and mentee. Looking forward to the performance!
Later I shared with mentor my concerning.
# I asked, I had completed 6 speeches within 16 meetings.
% Mentor said, Great.
# I asked, I am afraid I may keep up with your pace soon.
% Mentor replied, No problem.
# I asked, Even in that case, audience prefer your speech to mine.
% Mentor asked, Why?
# I said, Frankly, I used to take it as a game Super Mario. My job is to compete different levels from C1 to C10, which requires 10 prepared speeches. It was assumed to complete in 3 months. However, I am afraid I cannot do any better than you or new members when it comes to my C10: Inspire your audience. Then I decided to take it slowly.
% Mentor replied, When your CC manual was done, you may restart it from C1 to C10. It is suggested to compete with yourself because everybody leads a different style based on their experience.
# I said, Okay, I see. Will I finish my mentorship when I complete my C10 speech?
% Mentor said, Well, there is actually a long way to walk through after C10 speech.
# I said, Sure. Mentor speaks natural and simple English, I think.
% Mentor replied, Really?
# I continued, Yes, it is not native but sounds natural.
% Mentor replied, Haha, it is partly because I don’t have a big vocabulary.
# I added, Haha, I am suffering the same problem too. But your spoken English sounds comfortable without any pause.
% Mentor answered, Probably. In class, any pause may result in an embarrassment situation.
# I laughed, Sure. Your written English is great.
% Mentor replied, I am not sure.
# I asked, Do you think in English or Chinese? In an English conversation, it is difficult to input English, process in Chinese, and output English.
% Mentor replied, I think in English directly.
# I said, lucky you are. I used to spend 1 year in my freshmen year learning to think in English. Then I think in Chinese again after working one year in the government.
% Mentor laughed, Be patient, and take it slowly.
Sure, I will.
Finally, mentor, I had received plenty advice my university foreign teachers. However, I didn’t take them seriously. After graduating from university, I regretted for not having followed the old man’s advice. Now I am really learning and growing with you in Toastmasters. Did I?
Mentor said, well, you can see it works out both in theory and in practice. You are familiar with the real examples, right?
Exactly. Thank you, mentor!
To end it,
Mentor: 好嘞，我要闪了。
Mentee: 师傅拜拜!
That’s my 9th mentor review between mentor Jiaping and mentee Emily.
Good news that “师傅” or “Jiaping 师傅” or “功夫熊猫师傅” or “熊猫眼师傅” becomes really popular in the Toastmasters club now. Everybody knows that, didn’t you?
