The angle of Latham
I have a amuse experience at the last time flight race. In 1908, the man, called Lord Northcliffe, offered a prize of 1,000 dollars to the first person who would fly across English Channel. Over a year passed I decided to attempt the race. On July 19th, 1909 in the early morning, I took off from the French coast in my plane called Antoinette IV. When I had travelled only seven miles across the Channel, the engine broke down and I was forced to land on the sea. Antoinette with I floated on the water until I was rescued by a ship. Louis Bleriot arrived near Calais with a plane called No.XI. Bleriot had been making planes since 1905 and this was his lattes model. A week before, he had completed a successful overland flight during which he covered twenty-six miles. I did not give up easily and arrived near Calais on the same day with a new Antoinette. It was an exciting race across the Channel. We both planes were going to take off on July 25th, unfortunately I was not on time because of failing to get up early. Bleriot had made a short test flight at 4:15 am and set off half an hour later. Finally, I learnt that his great flight lasted. When he had successfully landed near Dover. The person to greet him was a local policeman. I made another attempt a week later though and got within half a mile of Dover, however, after my engine failed, it was the second time to land on the sea.
