Contra-Rotations is a group exhibition exploring contradictions and self-refutations in the making and presenting of art. The artists present works that investigate versatile, paradoxical, and overlapping spaces. Contra-Rotations invites, with honor, three guest artists to perform at the closing of the show. Installations will be joined by movements and sound, and spatial debates will encounter temporal puzzles.
In the original press release (see attached), the curators write that “the exhibition intends to introduce an image of the artist who traps his left foot by the right one, and in the suspended moment before his fall, energy is generated and theatrics appear.” Matty Davis literally embodies this image of the artist in dance works An Anchor For Each Vessel and Our Past the Fuse (solo excerpt). Upending, contorting, and enriching traditional dance vocabularies and performance techniques, Davis relentlessly chisels away at the body’s various thresholds with simultaneous physical intensity, tenderness and vulnerability, and near violence.
Hanul Kim (acoustic guitar, voice) and Yi Xin Tong (mixing console) will team up to create noise improvisation. In contrast to the conventional music performance setting, the artists invite the audience to participate, intervene, or even pause the multi-instrumental ensemble. They will re-activate Ran’s stage space – which was integrated into the installation of the show – and open it up to the exhibition visitors.
