My goal is this: Each of us draws or writes, every so often, casually and according to inclination, on a handy piece of drawing paper the idea he wants to communicate to our circle and sends each of the others a copy. In this way we shall have an exchange, question, answer, criticism.
(Bruno Taut, from a 1919 letter to friends)
Founded in the summer of 2014, Architroop is a platform where friends could talk with each other, have an exchange, question, answer and criticism as Bruno Taut mentioned, and manage to create new agendas.
Although this era is filled with overwhelming information, Architroop yearns for the old-school nostalgia —no broadcasting and propaganda, countless critique without production; nor having one another shallow conversation, living within the flamboyant academic illusion. Compared with formal conferences and academic journals, our communication is based on the familiarity of each other, therefore we could maintain the easy-going atmosphere while saving greetings and flatters, to enhance the efficiency of discussion.
We are interested in architecture, including landscape and urbanism, and anything relates to it —discussions happen in cross-discipline are encouraged. This platform is open and inclusive, we do not claim any manifesto or declaration. New paradigms could be brought out and discussed, the history could also be retrospected and reinterpreted. We do seek consistency, this is exactly the foundation of all the conversations and discoveries, however not the singular one, but multi-dimensional consistencies.
Architroop is a nomadic club, which could happen in any time, any places. Our friends live in China, United States and Europe. The FM makes our conversation being transmitted just-in-time, and the Architroop Magazine keeps the meaningful parts from being ephemeral. There are different ways to communicate, talk, seminar, reading etc. with different forms.
We’ll have our first seminar in Los Angeles this fall, and the topic is Anarchy, Self- Organization and Autonomy. The mediators are responsible for proposing the topic, inviting professors to give their advice, elaborating the topic and editing a reader.
When the winter comes, we will select the most interesting parts of our discussion in the past half year into the magazine. The magazine would also contains discussion with topic (the same as the seminar) in the form of essay, thesis, design or research, even picture or diagram. The publication would live in two versions in Simplified Chinese and English, digital one would be posted on the internet, issuu.com, and hard-copies would be sent to professors, architectural offices and schools.
At last, welcome aboard.
