ON THE LEVEL
ON THE LEVEL
Words by Leonard Cohen, music by Sharon Robinson
I knew that it was wrong
I didn't have a doubt
I was dying to get back home
And you were starting out
I said I best be moving on
You said, we have all day
You smiled at me like I was young
It took my breath away
Your crazy fragrance all around
Your secrets all in view
My lost, my lost was saying found
My don't was saying do
Let's keep it on the level
When I walked away from you
I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel too
They ought to give my heart a medal
For letting go of you
When I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel too
Now I'm living in this temple
Where they tell you what to do
I'm old and I've had to settle
On a different point of view
I was fighting with temptation
But I didn't want to win
A man like me don't like to see
Temptation caving in
Your crazy fragrance all around
You secrets in my view
My lost, my lost was saying found
My don't was saying do
Let's keep it on the level
When I walked away from you
I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel too
They ought to give my heart a medal
For letting go of you
When I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel too
So Long Marianne
I forget to pray for the angels
and then the angels forget to pray for us.

DBCohen:
“When I turned my back on the devil / Turned my back on the angle too” – As I said earlier, this album is full of allusions to Jesus, and the phrase in the first line of these two would necessarily make one think of him. Indeed, there must have been many who have faced the devil and rejected him, but the fountainhead of this image seems to be Jesus’ experience (Matthew 4; Mark 1; Luke 4). The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), by the way, does not have any similar encounter with the devil, although there is a certain resemblance between Jesus’ experience in the desert and that of Elijah (1 Kings 19). So, as common with LC, the religious image is always there, whenever he talks about love. And of course, the angel in the second line brings to mind the angels in so many earlier songs, in particular: “I forget to pray for the angels / and then the angels forget to pray for us” (could this song actually be about Marianne, then, rather than about a later lover?).
“Now I’m living in this temple / Where they tell you what to do” – These lines too allude to the religious theme, naturally. LC must be thinking of the temple where he spent several years and had to obey the rules, although he no longer lives there (but perhaps wishes to be in such a place again? Being confined to a place also brings to mind “The Tower Of Song”).
So on the whole it’s a lighter but also a typical song of LC, in which we hear his familiar “voice” (language, images, rhymes, irony), resonating with echos of many memories of the past.

blonde madonna:
We can take his lyrics too literally and over analyse them. He is a poet/writer who may use genuine experience but also constructs for artistic effect, borrowing a lot from familiar stories, using a lot of metaphors and generalising like heck to make his songs so universal.
Joe Way:
Blond Madonna, you are always one of my favorite posters and analyser of Leonard's poems and songs.
Bennyboy:
“They ought to give my heart a medal for letting go of you / When I turned my back on the devil, I turned my back on the angel, too,” he sings, invoking his stint in an ascetic Buddhist monastery in a way that suggests regret over abandoning the sensual pleasures of this world.
