A lab for experimental art hiding in an old residence.
Arc Space is Beijing’s first alternative art studio that is embedded in a university community. It provides a public space for artists, curators, university students, and people with an interest and passion in art, with art activities, exhibitions, and workshops.
Arc Space, founded in a rented house in May, 2015, is now run by artist Jerome Araki. It is located in the Haidian District of Beijing, purposely far away from art schools, art districts and hutong communities that gradually prevailed in recent years to fills the void of alternative art spaces of this district. Arc Space represents a new model of art space, and its “novelty” is given by the surroundings. Art activities are happening somewhere that is beyond people’s mind, so we are on the alert from the residents and even the authority of university. In spite of that, Arc Space sticks to the cutting-edge of art theories and ideas at all times and pays attention to the continuous, deep artistic practice from all ages of artists. As a lab for experimental art, we provide space for artists to research and experiment, and inspire through inviting local residents to participate. As a platform for communication, we endeavor to actively separate ourselves from the monotonous and tedious theoretical derivation by the way of conducting artistic experiments, renewing the foundation of communication, and making academic theory as the active factor for art creation. It is difficult for Arc Space to limit its view only in the field of “art”. By setting up the connecting bridges among various subjects and disciplines, we will try to achieve the backwash of “dissimilation” produced by society.
