提到美国死亡金属的起源，我们立刻会想到的乐队是 POSSESSED, DEATH 还有 MASTER... 乐队的绝对核心就是 Paul Speckmann， 来自美国芝加哥。1982年创建 Warcry 乐队演奏激流金属风格，随后成立 MASTER 开始尝试死亡金属风格，并且在90年代末期签约当时最大的死亡金属唱片发行制作公司之一 Nuclear Blast (核爆炸)。
这张唱片背后有很多故事，也有很多著名的人物参与到故事中来。可能很多人不知道 Master 的第一张同名专辑录制过2次。第一次是在芝加哥录制的，但是核爆炸的老板不喜欢这个版本，认为应该重录。于是1991年，乐队到了当时美国南部佛罗里达最有名的 Morrisound Studios 准备第二次录制这张专辑，制作人正是 Scott Burns（著名制作人，几乎早期所有的美国大牌死亡金属唱片均出自他手，曾经为 Death, Cannibal Corpse, Sepultura, Obituary, Suffocation 等等众多乐队担任制作人。）第二次的录音乐队更换了阵容，并且将每一首歌曲做了改进，也有几首新歌。后来 Scott Burns 专门到芝加哥去帮助缩混第一次的母带，最终唱片公司选择将第一次的录音以MASTER的名字发行。核爆炸将第二次录制的专辑以 Speckmann Project 的名义发行（唱片编号NB056）。于是就有了这张“特殊”唱片的由来。和所有早期死亡金属乐队一样，MASTER 的音乐中都有浓烈的激流金属成分。 是早期死亡金属中被完全忽视的一张唱片，在那些当年就听过这张唱片的人心目中，这是一张不折不扣的经典。
2012年，正式这张唱片发行20周年的日子，很荣幸 AreaDeath Prod. 得到了再版发行这张的机会。我们非常重视这张作品，邀请了多次与我们合作的设计师王家斌绘制封套，同时为 Paul Speckmann 做了一次深入的采访，内容讲述这张唱片的由来和当时发生在美国死亡金属圈的一些内幕故事。这张唱片由乐队授权限量发行1000张，每张带有独立的手写编号。前500张编号附赠 A1 海报！

Like Early Master...Great! - 90%
Paul Speckmann’s first and only effort is a fucking killer album! It features old school death/thrash metal like early Master and I believe that all the energies and inspiration that should have been used in the “Collection Of Souls” album were directly transferred here because this one is far more better! The production is old school but clear and fucking powerful.
Aaron Nickeas, that played in “On The Seventh Day…” too is a great drummer, essential but with a great skill in playing the bass drum: fucking fast! Obviously in a re-written song like “Funeral Bitch” (from the Funeral Bitch group’s first period) you can notice the unfailing Hellhammer influences. Great. The things are getting even better with the great “Rabid Anger” with plenty of up tempos and a catchy refrain.
Actually, “On the Seventh Day…” still remains the top in this field but with this piece of metal we can really go close. After a more mid paced “Mangled Dehumanization”, the up tempos take revenge on the powerful “Fallen From Grave”, a fucking great song. Paul’s vocals are always great and a true trademark with the raw tonality, but never too screamed. “Pay To Die” (re-recorded from Death Strike period) is amazing! One of the best here with restless drumming.
Like in early Master, the refrains are always very important in their sound and along with great verses, create always catchy songs and the guitars work is always very inspired and quite never boring. For sure you would not expect from a song like the final “Live For Free” a devastating drum work like that by the end. Massive brutality.
What a surprise! Recommended for any death/thrash metal fan who loved very first Master’s albums.
