Formed in early 2009 in Shenzhen, The Collective’s initial six months was a stop-start process that witnessed numerous line-up changes. By the summer of 09 American slide guitar player, “The Fred” and British bass / ukulele player, Tom Bird were all that remained of the original band. Without the support of other musicians the duo was forced into the acoustic café circuit around the Peal River Delta. The pair spent several frustrated months writing material and auditioning drummers. Finally, they came upon seasoned northern Chinese drummer, Xiao Yu。
The band was reborn with a new direction and a stable line-up.
The trio began playing weekly at Shenzhen’s main live venue, Idutang and occasionally at Guangzhou’s Ping Pong Art Space. They used this time to develop their trademark stage persona, fronted by “The Fred” who commonly performs in his Pajamas. All songs are originals; a no covers rule was unanimously decided upon due to the propensity of cover bands in the area. Though the band plays rock, an uncompromising, subversive attitude was also cultivated whereby The Collective sought not to be pigeonholed into a formulaic sound comprising standard progressions or predictable lyrics. Most of the songs aim to chronicle the everyday life of people living in Guangdong and are riddled with humor and laced with innuendo. Titles like ‘Bad Chow Mein,’ ‘Mingong Sally’ and ‘Luohu City Nights’ testify to this end. The music itself fuses rock with jazz, reggae, funk and Chinese folk. The later style was enabled by the incorporation of Shanxi woodwind specialist, Li Hui Ming who joined the band in early 2010.
After Spring Festival, the invigorated four-piece began playing more venues around the PRD, notably Shekou’s Enigma, and Guangzhou’s C:Union. In June the Collective won second place in the annual Battle of the Bands hosted at Hooley’s Irish bar. They were the only band to play original material.
The band will record its first EP, in early August，2010.
