When coming to China 2 years ago, Joe decided that he wanted to play soul music and started looking for a suitable singer, meeting River Li in the process, a Chinese Korean, now the charismatic front face and voice of the Soul Doctors. "To my surprise, I discovered that God has seen fit to put a voice of a 1970s Afro American soul diva inside the body of a Korean interpreter."
Joe said: The name Soul Doctors was conceived to highlight the gap between the really great Black American music of the sixties and the depressing sound that has come to be known as modern R&B. It's difficult to watch people in a room listening to a lot of modern American music and not feel that they are sick and in need of a cure."
The band claims that playing that originally Black music is not limited by ethnicity, so the origins of the members are diverse: British (Joe), American (James), Italian (Daniele), Korean (River), Indonesian (Charles), or Chinese (Ella and RIver) - Joe: The only thing that matters is that you have soul.
