Review for The Fever Machine
(reviewed by Chi Chao)
Shanghai's rock scene is more open and compatible relative to Beijing's Rock Scene, so although local extreme metal bands are rarely seen, local metal fans can always pack a venue——Let's get down to business, The Fever Machine, a rock band formed by foreigners who live in Shanghai, is actually a band which fits the Shanghai rock scene and maybe should be dubbed a "mix-alternative" band.
Speaking of "mix", since they do not have the appearance of a particular distinctive style but make music in the form of "plus+" which incorporates styles featuring space imagination and multi-direction possibilities such as stoner, grunge, progressive, noise, psychedelic, etc. This is, of course, their characteristics and charm. If the band was formed twenty years earlier, they sure will enjoy surfing in the crazy alternative music scene then——what I say is their music can be traced back to the Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden and My Bloody Valentine.
Therefore, I was bewildered when I was listening to their music, the same kind of feeling I got when I first listened to Proximity Butterfly: This is a Chinese band? Oh, they are foreigners in China. Pure Chinese people, actually can not make this music yet, which is so mixed, open, with a great sense of space and psychedelic at the same time without losing the heavy, melody and rhythm changes. A lot of Chinese rockers dedicated to make this kind of music, but can not help it——this is not the gap between people, but between social difference. So it is fortunate for me to get to hear this in Shanghai which may be common in the west; equally unfortunately, this is a band formed by foreigners, rather than Chinese.
