Second Edition of the Global China Review (GCR)
Letter from GCR Editor-in-Chief Alexander Banh\:
"As Associate Director for Publishing, I am pleased to publish our second edition of Global China Review (GCR). It is our hope that the articles above have encouraged you to think further about the issues facing China at the dawn of this new century from a multidisciplinary perspective. GCR is a semiannual publication produced by the members of Global China Connection, reflecting our goal to foster connections, dialogue, and understanding between China and the rest of the world.
GCR focuses on a wide array of issues such as business, international relations, environment policy and sustainable development, scientific research, education, and culture. While the topics may vary, all articles are written for, and by, university students who share a global perspective and believe that China’s global role will continue to expand."

Canada Conference 2012 \: A “Signature Event” for one of GCC’s “Banner Regions”
Global China Connection’s first ever conference in Canada was held on January 28th at the University of Toronto. The product of coordinated efforts by GCC chapters at Laurier University, McGill University, Queens University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Western Ontario, the conference focused on growing entrepreneurial and financial opportunities in China as well as social change in the country, featuring high-profile speakers Karl Moore of McGill University and Benjamin Boehm of Bombardier Aerospace China.
“The conference has really brought the Canadian chapters together,” said Jack Ni, Vice President Internal of the GCC’s chapter at McGill University. “Our organizers had great chemistry when they started off this project, and everyone’s hard work exemplifies the teamwork of the Canadian GCC chapters.”
The success of the Canadian Conference goes beyond having put together a well-organized, high-quality event, as it is evidence of a degree of regional chapter collaboration and effort that is unprecedented in GCC history.
So unprecedented, in fact, that Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper wrote a letter of support.
The conference was the brainchild of Matthew Gan, president of GCC’s Western Ontario chapter. “This conference is a stepping stone for further GCC growth in Canada,” said Gan. “It has established a strong image and reputation for GCC in Canada with its prominent speakers.”
With the contributions of chapter presidents Anita Tang, Linda El Halabi, Kate Peng, Lisa Yao, under the direction of GCC Director of Network Mohamed Ismail, planning for the conference began in the summer of 2011 and continued through the fall semester. All five of the chapters responsible for the conference actively contributed to planning, sourcing of speakers, and logistics.
The hard work and dedication of conference co-directors Lily Zeng and Victor Xu of University of Western Ontario as well as meeting planning secretary Sara Lee and the GCC - Canada website designers Zhang of McGill and Tiffany Lee of Western, deserves praise as well.
“The Canadian chapters are using this conference to cement the region together. The Canadian chapters are well past using the conference as simply a means to build bonds. Each chapter is already looking to the future and legacy of the region as a whole. That is probably why Canada has been selected as a ‘banner region of GCC’s development’ by GCC president Daniel Tedesco.”
The Canada Conference will undoubtedly serve as a model and foundation for future regional events of similar scope.

Upcoming GCC - Emory - March China Business Summit
The Emory chapter will be holding a China Business Summit -- "China on the Crossroads of Change" -- in March, which is expected to bring an array of professionals, including local business leaders and university professors, to facilitate in-depth conversations between university students and professionals from various fields.
The Summit will be focused on topics concerning China's recent economic trends and its evolving culture in comparison to that of major Western countries.
The discussion will have three main subtopics\: (1) The discrepancies in the values of consumerism between American and Chinese cultures; (2) The effectiveness of social media in connecting China with the rest of the world; and (3) The likelihood of China leading innovation in the 21st century.

China in the News
How Obama’s Tough Talk Plays in China
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao is on a six-day trip to three of the Middle East's major oil producers\: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. All three are close U.S. allies; a Chinese Prime Minister has not visited Saudi Arabia in two decades. But the biggest news here may be the Middle Eastern energy exporter he isn't visiting\: Iran, China's third-greatest source of oil. There's no reason to believe that the China-Iran relationship is ending, but this is another indication that China's interest in dealing with Iran may be waning. If that happens, it would do wonders for America's containment strategy, and Washington might have Israel -- and perhaps Tehran itself -- to thank.
The Tehran-Beijing relationship is an important one to both countries. Because international sanctions keep Western firms out of Iran, Chinese state-owned enterprises have found it rife with development opportunities and favorable trade deals, including 11% of the Chinese oil imports helping to fuel China's growing economy. Iran desperately needs China, its biggest buyer, to displace Western business and keep its increasingly troubled economy afloat. But the relationship is far more important for Iran, where the leadership likely fears that a drop in oil exports could return protesters to the streets, than it is for China.
