Orlando
She's lived for 400 years and hardly aged a day; but, because this is England, everyone pretends not to notice.
If you had ageless existence, how would you choose to spend your time? Would you seize the day and live life to the hilt, or take your unbelievable good fortune and become the ultimate slacker? As much as we mere mortals are reminded of the finitude of our existence, we all too often forget that our days are numbered and our efforts limited. It only stands to reason that immortals might not take "carpe diem" as their motto.
ORLANDO is the story of one such individual, the Lord/Lady Orlando who values companionship and literature over personal achievement, and ironically finds neither during most of the course of his/her existence.
The movie is divided up into several different sections based on the historical eras of Orlando's long existence. In the first, DEATH (1600)
In the 1610 section, LOVE, Orlando confronts the death of the Queen and his parents, and prepares to embark on a political career that involves marrying the Lady Euphrosyne.
His heart really isn't in it, and he tumbles for Sasha the daughter of the Muscovite ambassador. Unfortunately He's too much in love -with- love and melancholy to impress Sasha, who has her own duty to her father to consider. Sasha also gives him the brush to go back home with her dad. The stress causes Orlando to go into the first of several long sleeps which serve to regenerate him.
The poet Nick Greene makes an appearance in 1650 [POETRY}, and reiterates the fact that Orlando's isolation is draining him of life opportunities, so he decides to go into politics as an ambassador on behalf of King William I [1700-POLITICS].
A war breaks out, and the Caliph demands Orlando's assistance. He complies, but the horrors of war break his spirit. He undergoes another regenerative sleep, and notes a marginal change upon awakening
When she returns to England, Lady Orlando tries to re-enter SOCIETY (1750), only to find herself regarded as a charming, yet stupid, ornament by the literary men of her time. She leaves salon society in disgust only to find that, because of her sex and age, her rights to the family estates are being challenged in Chancery Court. Archduke Harry offers her his hand in marriage, but she realizes what Sasha was getting at all those years ago and flees into the estate's hedge maze...
