Correspondance 1935-1980

It began with Durrell's letter to Miller in praise of Tropic of Cancer. It blossomed into the long friendship of these 2 influential novelists represented here as their 45-year correspondence. To look at their work you might think they had little in common. But of primary importance to both was a great passion for the craft of writing, a frequent topic of these letters. Along with women and their love for them and travel, 2 more important topics. They also have interesting things to say about their individual projects. These are the years in which Durrell wrote The Alexandria Quartet and 3 volumes of The Avignon Quintet, and he constantly kept Miller apprised of his progress and his thinking as he worked. Miller finished the Tropic novels and The Rosy Crucifixion. One of the more charming traits of the letters is the abundant affection they show for each other while at the same time being good and honest critics of what the other is writing. Durrell is the more elegant correspondent, though he often lets his boyish enthusiasm show, and this is in contrast to Miller's more workmanlike style. Always Miller seems bemused by his success. Durrell was grateful, of course, but he was also confident of his art and was more intent on producing a lasting body of work.
"Jump off. You are a protected individual. Do not fear."
Miller gave Durrell the push he needed to commit to writing full-time. This correspondence takes them from unknowns to famous curmudgeons.
